Working in watercolor
and oil media, Charles Murphy has been painting and exhibiting
throughout the Grand Traverse region for the past 26 years.
His work in various series may feature landscape and seascape,
social commentary, humor, or even pure abstraction. He has
illustrated two books, “Reach for the Moon” (Pfiefer-Hamilton,
1994) and “Smokey the Racoon” (P.J. Publishing,
1999). Though featured in several northern Michigan galleries,
his longest running gallery affiliation with “State
of the Art” has fostered an annual exhibition in July
and August, now in its 17th year.
Murphy is a 1974 graduate of Minnesota State University with
his BFA in studio art. He is a member of the ISEA (International
Society Of Experimental Artists). Charles Murphy teaches painting
at The Grand Traverse Art Center during the Fall, Winter,
and Spring terms and has taught at many art centers around
the country for week long painting workshops. Major influences
on his work he credits to Richard Diebenkorn, Mark Rothko,
and Adolf Gottlieb in the oil medium and Winslow Homer, Edward
Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, Frank Webb and Jeanne Dobie in the watercolor
medium.
